Live in Lower East Side

Parameters: The Lower East Side (LES) is bounded by the Bowery to the west, East Houston Street to the north, the FDR Drive to the east, and Canal Street to the north. Because of the developers who have snapped up buildings and renovated the interiors or who have demolished buildings to build new buildings the Lower East Side is on the list of America’s Most Endangered Places.

Lower east side is arguably New York City’s trendiest neighborhood aside from being one of the oldest in the city. The juxtaposition of old tenements and new high rises, like the 26-story Essex Crossing, makes this a visual architectural smorgasbord.

The contrasts don’t end there but can be seen in its residents: from locals who have lived in the area for decades to the newer array of hipsters and fashionistas. It can also be seen in its shops. Places like Katz’s Deli which dates back to 1888 to a large array of coffee shops where you can sit and work on your laptop for hours on end.

It’s also home to the best thrift stores in the city. If you love bargains and want designer clothes for a fraction of the price, the Lower East Side is packed with vintage places.

Art is everywhere. Literally. Murals on many of the streets. Major art galleries like Con Artist Collective, Rachel Uffner Gallery, Sperone Westwater, and Bitforms Gallery.

If you want to take a look back to see how the early Lower East Siders lived then step inside the Tenement Museum located at 103 Orchard Street. The two tenements that comprise the museum housed over 15,000 working class immigrants and were built in 1863 with no heat, no water, no bathtub, no shower and toilets outside of the apartment. They are certainly a far cry from the renovated tenements most residents live in now which offer stainless steel appliances and accessible roof decks sporting some of the best city views anywhere.

The Lower East Side today draws millions of tourists and young, trendy professionals seeking the perfect juxtaposition of old and new architecture, buzzy restaurants and bars, and specialty boutique shops. With an endless list of things to see and do, the Lower East Side is the perfect New York neighborhood.
