Live in Greenwich Village

Parameters: Greenwich Village is bordered by Broadway to the east, the North River (part of the Hudson River) to the west, Houston Street to the south, and 14th Street to the North. At the center is Washington Square Park and New York University.

Between the West Village on the west, with its maze of narrow historic streets, and the East Village to the east - an early mecca for the down and out turned artists’ haven turned mecca for young professionals — you will find Greenwich Village proper.

If there was a neighborhood that one could compare to the streets of Paris it would be Greenwich Village which has a charm that no other neighborhood captures. It invites you to get lost exploring since the streets don’t abide by the rules of the typical grid system of Manhattan and instead it is laid out with long winding streets.

Greenwich Village, commonly referred to as simply ‘the Village’ is eminently walkable, and there may be more culture per square foot in this part of the city than any other. Historic Washington Square Park is at the center of the neighborhood. Did you know that the area that occupies the park was once a burial ground? And there are many smaller parks: Christopher, Father Fagan, Minetta Triangle, Petrosino Square, Little Red Square, in addition to Time Landscape.

There is a smorgasbord of apartment types in renovated centuries-old walk up brownstones, well-appointed elevator prewar apartment buildings, former factories turned high-ceilinged lofts, and newer luxury rentals in steel-and-glass buildings (although some of these are in former factories transformed into residential units).

New York University’s art collection can be found at the Grey Art Gallery at 100 Washington Square East and has been noted for its museum quality exhibitions of contemporary art.

The Village also has a bustling performing arts scene. From Off-off Broadway theatres, to jazz clubs (like The Blue Note), as well as a host of comedy clubs like the Comedy Cellar where comedians like Dave Chappelle and Marc Maron got their start.

From a resident: I thought it was going to be loud and difficult to live here, but I've been surprised. The area I am in, while it sometimes can get noisy, is quite quiet. The parks around my apartment building always have workers cleaning and tending to the plants, which keeps the park very well-groomed. I have my choice of any type of cuisine I could desire, and I can have it delivered to my home, or walk there in a matter of minutes. And if I'm traveling somewhat far, all I have to do is step out the door to find a Citi Bike, taxi or subway station.”
